John Joeckel's background is in international and US marine transportation, legislative advocacy and regulatory compliance, maritime security, emergency preparedness and response, including Incident Commander on over 100 marine and facility environmental incident responses. Recently he participated on both the Michigan crude oil pipeline spill as a Deputy Planning Section Chief and the Deepwater Horizon incident acting as Deputy Dispersant Group Supervisor. In the past he was seconded to Exxon to assist in the clean-up of the Exxon Valdez oil spill. A graduate of the State University of New York Maritime College, John has served as a tank vessel deck officer and first class pilot as well as designing, constructing and operating VLCC's and Aframax crude tankers, Great Lakes tankers, inland river towboats and tank barges, as well as managing a shipyard and President of a marine transportation company. John has participated on various industry committees for the American Petroleum Institute, American Waterways Operators and the American Bureau of Shipping as well as a Director on the Board of the Marine Preservation Association.He has received a Public Service Commendation from the Commandant of the United States Coast Guard for participating on the OPA '90 Reg-Neg Committee and has provided testimony to various congressional committees on oil spill and other marine transportation issues.
